| Mauna Kea Infrared has designed, built, tested, and deployed numerous array control electronics systems for various arrays. Our primary focus has been on cutting edge infrared arrays. Generally the primary design goals are high definition spectrum analysis, reliability, and noise control & rejection.
The latest array controller implementation is Redstar3.
Overview: The Redstar3 is MKIR`s latest array controller implementation and is developed from a proven platform. Redstar3 can be configured to control single and multiple array implementations. In the NICI instrument Redstar3 controls two 1024X1024 Aladdin III arrays for high resolution frame differencing optimized for observations of faint objects in the immediate vicinity of bright sources.
This diagram depicts a typical implementation of the Redstar3 array controller. This particular implementation is for observations that require very low read noise and high frame readout rates. Modularity is a primary consideration for all MKIR products, so Redstar3 can be implemented in a wide variety of systems. Redstar3 can operate in standalone mode or under facility control in remote mode. Array clocking control is provided by digital clock signals converted to analog levels in Redstar3 and is then fed to the array in the cryostat. The resulting array outputs are amplified and converted to digital pixel data. The pixel data is passed over a high speed fiber link to a server class multiprocessor server for image processing. The Image Processor can perform preliminary data processing and store the data locally or pass the data on to facility's data handling system. Fiber optic isolation of Redstar3 aids in producing extremely low noise data. Array Implementations: Redstar3 can be implemented with various arrays. Single and multiple arrays can be driven. New and other array types not listed here can be implemented. Some arrays that MKIR has implemented are:
