Mauna Kea Infrared

Mauna Kea Infrared specializes in the design, construction, and testing of infrared instruments primarily for the professional astronomical community. These instruments are built for serious users to very high standards of performance, reliability, documentation, and ease of use. Our instruments are cryogenically cooled with liquid cryogens or closed cycle coolers. Generally these are facility instruments.

A long history of leading the development and successful commissioning of instruments for a wide variety of applications makes MKIR well suited to produce cutting edge astronomical and photographic instruments today. MKIR can design and build complete instruments or subsystems for Instrument Control, Array Control, Array Mount, Adaptive Optics, and other applications. Custom Instrument Design & Fabrication is available.

MKIR specializes in IR camera systems, spectrometers, and coronagraphs and works most frequently in the wavelengths from visible light down to about 20 microns. We have worked with the following detectors:

Detectors

  • 1024x1024 SBRC Aladdin
  • 256x256 HgTe NICMOS
  • 128x128 Rockwell BIB
  • 58x62 SBRC In:Sb
  • A variety of CCD sensors as fast and slow guiders

Outside of the astronomical realm MKIR designs and builds instruments which capture high quality, high sensitivity scientific data for a spectrum of applications. Please see our Products and Services and Projects pages for more details.

MKIR has a facility in Hilo for the assembly and testing of instruments as well as a facility in Honolulu where array control electronics are built and tested. We have mechanical engineering and finite element analysis capabilities and have parts made locally in Hilo, Honolulu, and California.
